Jim Mayer is a renowned bass player and has been touring and recording in Jimmy Buffett’s Coral Reefer band since 1989. He has performed live with James Taylor, Ringo Starr, Don Henley, and Joni Mitchell, and has recorded with Little Feat, JD Souther, and Mac McAnally.
As a teenager Mayer won a National Endowment for the Arts Student Study Grant for Jazz Upright Bass. He was invited to be on the faculty of Aebersold Jazz Clinics at DeKalb University shortly after. A record deal with Warner Bros. Records in 1988 along with brother Peter Mayer, and drummer Roger Guth, as the band "PM", led him to Jimmy Buffett through producer Elliot Scheiner’s recommendation. Mayer first met Jimmy Buffett in New York City for the recording of "Off To See The Lizard" with producer Elliot Scheiner. Buffett invited the band to Key West to get a taste of Margaritaville. While in Key West Buffett invited Mayer and his band mates to join the Coral Reefer Band and tour that summer. Mayer is also a children's advocate, songwriter, and author.
