Artist Bio
In his seven years as the lead singer of the legendary Tower of Power, Tom Bowes garnered nothing but rave reviews. Those in the know are aware of the talent it takes to front a ten piece band with five powerful horns, and reviewers have consistently praised Bowes’ “high range, powerful voice, and unique versatility."
Touring almost non-stop with Tower, Tom sang to audiences in Japan and Europe, with sold-out shows in Tokyo, Scandinavia, Germany, Italy, Paris and London. He crisscrossed the United States and Canada performing in venues from small clubs to the giant Newport and Playboy Jazz Festivals, Milwaukee's renowned Summerfest and an appearance on Late Night with David Letterman.
Influenced in his early years by everything from folk music to artists like Stevie Wonder and Chaka Khan, Aerosmith, Yes and James Taylor, Tom moved from the farm (Really!) in Massachusetts to New York City. Once there, he was fortunate enough to meet and work with quite a few phenomenal musicians. He composed for and sang with the band G-Jam, which was prominent in the Village scene, in the early 80’s.
Later on he joined the band Funk Filharmonik, a 12-piece soul band based on Long Island and comprised of musicians who have played live and in the studio with just about every artist you could think of. Tom worked with them for a brief period before leaving for California and Tower of Power. He returned and rejoined Funk Filharmonik and so it is, to this very day. The band has recently finished a new CD, which is currently receiving some great reviews and a lot of radio play. You can hear samples and purchase it at www.funkfilharmonik.com.
Over the years, Tom has had the pleasure of performing along side a wide range of artists including Ray Charles, Roger Daltrey, Queen Latifah, Alan White (Yes), The Doobie Brothers, Michael McDonald, Orleans, Will Lee, Michelle Shocked and many others. He can also be heard in some major motion pictures including, White Palace (Universal – 1990), View From the Top (Miramax-2003) and Shaolin Soccer (Miramax-2004).
Although a majority of his career has been spent working with other artists, Tom has never forgotten his roots back in the country and his love of acoustic music. He has written throughout his musical life and is now proceeding in a slightly different direction, getting back to a simpler style of acoustic music. He is presently working on a solo CD that he hopes to have finished, “when it’s finished”. You can check out some samples on his web site as they’re done at www.tombowes.com, so stay tuned. Although he is known as the quintessential "rock and soul" singer, his vocals deliver a wide range of emotion and style
