SINGLE REVIEW: Jordan Covington “Way Back”
Posted on October 23 2013 by Elise Tiripicchio
Jordan Covington was one of a select handful of artists chosen to perform at the Pepsi 2013 Gulf Coast Jam. These artists were hand picked because they have not compromised their artistic integrity with ‘The New Popular Sound’ in country music. Jordan Covington is following in the footsteps of artists who have inspired him: Eric Church, Bruce Springsteen, Kip Moore, Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings, and Jason Aldean to name a few. Without a doubt, Covington’s taste in country music leans toward the edgier rock side of the genre.
On his newly released iTunes single “Way Back“, he incorporates some impressive banjo from Luke Skaggs, son of the legendary bluegrass and country entertainer Ricky Skaggs. What I liked about “Way Back” was that I did not have to listen to it over and over to decide if I liked it. From the get go, I was drawn to the lyrics and the music. Clean, clear, melodic, edgy…and veering a bit from the new norm of country music.
I always fall hard for songs that tell a story…the songwriters or mine. And although this one includes some reminiscing of Covington’s personal story…a grand slam playing ball at the end of his senior year of high school, a passion for the sport inspired by his grandfather..it has a universally appealing message. We can’t actually go “Way Back” to a specific moment in time but we still have the memories that can take us there. And that they do. Memories can bring you back to a time, a place, a person, a feeling. And memories are so often prompted by song.
So, take a listen to “Way Back”, and I am sure you will find yourself drifting to another time, another place… a memory…”Way Back”.
