Bleu Edmondson’s gritty vocal style is what captures your attention first, simultaneously begging comparisons to silk and to sand. But look just beneath the surface and you find the heart of a Texas poet and the soul of all-American roots rocker.
With his current album, The Future Ain’t What It Used To Be, the follow-up to 2007’s critically acclaimed Lost Boy, Edmondson embarked on a search for truth, digging deeper into what the music meant to him as a musician, a writer and a man. “Writing is like holding up a mirror to those darkest corners of our lives that we keep hidden,” confides the raspy-throated singer. “It’s not always a pretty reflection, but it’s real and it matters.” The collection of songs ministers to the saint and the sinner in each of us. It is an amalgamation of those touch points and influences that give us permission to question, confront and raise a little hell on Saturday night.
Don’t let his introspective soul-searching fool you though. Edmondson also knows how to crank up the amps and throw down hard, often evoking comparisons to Bruce Springsteen, something Edmondson has difficulty comprehending, “Whenever I hear someone say ‘you’re the Texas Springsteen’, I’m flattered of course, but there’s only one Springsteen, and in my opinion, he is beyond compare.”
Edmondson’s latest single, “Black and White”, is a poignant story about one young man’s struggle to find work and his decision to join the military in a last ditch effort to help his poverty-stricken family. Bleu is donating the proceeds from the download of this song to the Boot Campaign, a grassroots initiative started by five women from Texas which cultivates awareness and raises funds to help our military troops with the challenges they often face upon return home.
